We’ve been going to Florida now since Easter 2001. That first year we had the usual week in Orlando to do the theme parks, followed by a week on the coast. We stayed in a house broadly like ours in Bradenton for the coastal leg, and loved it, but it was 45 minute to the beach most days – which felt like a long time. But the beach and the isalnds were so lovely, and we were happy to do it.
We went back to Bradenton, staying in various other houses for the following 2 years, before deciding to buy our own if we could find something we liked (and could afford!). Luckily we found the house in Colonial Pointe.
It was almost the last house for sale on the inside of the Loop, with the lake frontage which we wanted, so we can use the pool, relax in the sun & at the same time watch the ibis, egrets, heron and ospreys on the water.
When we first saw the house, we had only spent a few days in the area. We were so pleased it was so close to the beaches, and that there was so much to do in the area. We’re been back every year, at least twice and sometimes three times. Mainly at Christmas and Easter latterly. We love it.
What do we do when we’re there? We spend quite a bit of time just hanging out – relaxing and enjoying the weather, the house and pool, and reacquainting ourselves with our neighbours.
We shop (Miramar Outlet Mall is our favourite place), eat seafood in the more rustic local restaurants, walk in Lakes Park and along the beaches, and enjoy the wildlife. We also like the more historic aspects of the area - history in the USA is all relative of course, but it's nice to have things like the Edison & Ford houses to visit. And since we're tennis fans, we've been to the Miami Open. We also like the Sarsota area and sometimes spend a day up there.
